Vibe Rater Podcast #17 (Jenny B - The Tea Time Mix)

The podcast returns, with a new contributor. Previously known as Vibe Rater’s art director (a job title which, for some reason or other, didn’t make it onto her CV), Jenny B now takes centre stage with this Essential Mix-like episode.

Jen makes full use of the space here, with some beats to kick things off before bringing out the big guns, including a dream of a track by Rone. Things wind down but with some tasteful selections, it’s more Late Night Tales than student house YouTube-fest.

What really sets the mix apart is how seamlessly tunes from various genres work next to each other. Nicolas Jaar and Sub Focus? Clearly on good terms. Ofra Haza and Greyret? Probably used to chill together in Tel Aviv. Indeed, this mix is as rich as the biscuits you’re dunking during tea time.

Vibe Rater Podcast #14 (Ketana's Deep Mix)

If it seems the term 'deep house' is being bandied about like Coca-Cola right now, VR has the antidote. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with the R&B-inflected sound dominating the airwaves right now, but people who call their music ‘deep’ tend to expect something else.

Korea-based Ketana picks out some beauties which, while often satisfying our current obsession with funky basslines, also hark back to the soulful roots of house. Vocal tracks are spread sparsely throughout the mix – sometimes, less really is more – while the energy level tows the line between chillout and dancefloor very subtly. Anyone into their house music needs to get into this vibe right here.

Vibe Rater Podcast#13 (We See Away) [Mixed by Ishan]

These are good times for techno. There’s been a real resurgence in artists going for dark or industrial sounds. What’s more, artists such as Untold are bringing over expertise from the “post-dubstep” scene, encouraging producers to do something different. To me, the most interesting aspect right now is the likes of the Zenker brothers using varied percussion in their tracks, belying the 4/4 framework which still pervades the genre. So then, this is my take on what techno sounds like in 2013...

There’s no denying that house is the dominant sound in electronic music right now. That’s due, in part, to a number of talented young producers coming through and making the sound their own. However, this process has led to the production of a lot of sub-standard music, with tunes spreading across YouTube boasting neither fresh ideas nor dancefloor sensibility, sapping the enthusiasm of those who crave quality over quantity. So what’s the answer?
